Floreana was home to the first resident of the Galapagos—Irishman Patrick Watkins, who lived here from 1807 to 1809—and is the site of one of the world’s most ingenious post offices. Centuries ago, whalers would leave letters in a wooden barrel in hopes that subsequent visitors would find and transport their mail to its desired destination. Today, travelers still can leave addressed correspondences or take any postcards they wish to hand-deliver themselves. At Cormorant Point, the presence of olivine crystals has given the sand at one beach a greenish hue, while a second beach is a nesting spot for sea turtles. The area also features a brackish lagoon, where you can see scavenging flamingos, pintail ducks, large-billed flycatchers and various species of finch. The Devil’s Crown, a volcanic crater shaped by the waves, is a popular snorkeling spot that boasts marine life ranging from hawkfish to hammerhead sharks.
