Ivittuut is an abandoned mining settlement in southwestern Greenland, set along the quiet Arsuk Fjord. Once globally significant, it was the world's only major source of cryolite, a rare mineral essential to early aluminum production. Founded in the 19th century, the town declined after the mine closed in the late 1980s and is now deserted. Visitors arriving by expedition cruise encounter weathered buildings, mining remnants, and a stark Arctic landscape.
