As the capital and central port of Messinia, Kalamata is a land of indented coastlines, sandy dunes, valleys and fertile plains, and many interesting archaeological sites. After gaining independence from the Turks and exploiting its fertile land, this port was developed into the urban center we see today. In addition to many other historical and cultural sites spread throughout the city, travelers can visit places such as Vassileos Georgiou (King George) square and Aristomenous Street to find shops, venues, and patisseries. Take a stroll into the Greek Gallery of Modern Art, or go out to see Palia Poli at the foot of the Castle of Isabeau.
