Karatsu is located in the Saga Prefecture. It has strong historical bonds with China and Korea as an ancient trading port. The Karatsu Kunchi festival in November draws in 500,000 visitors every year from every part of Japan. The festival includes several floats getting carried through the streets and traditional taiko drummers and flutists at the base of the floats. The purpose of the festival is to socialize with friends and family, and enjoy good food and beer. The city is also known for its fresh squid served sashimi style, the Yokubo Big Bridge, and a festival in which there is a giant game of tug of war between fishermen and farmers.
