Matsuyama is known for two main attractions: Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Onsen. The castle dates back to 1602, and is one of Japan's twelve original surviving casltes. Located on a steep hill, travelers can either reach the castle entrance by climbing to the top or taking the ropeway to the castle park. The Dogo Onsen is the oldest hot spring resort in Japan and includes various bath options depending on the preference of the guest. Other attractions in the area include Mitsuhama, a historic port district separated from Matsuyama City by the Miyamae River, and various other parks, shopping centers, and museums.
