McMurdo Sound, Antarctica

To see discounted cruises that visit or depart from this port, use the Find a Bargain box on the left.

Lying at the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf, McMurdo Sound forms the western extension of the Ross Sea. It is a major channel for Antarctic exploration, and was first discovered by Sir James Clark Ross in 1841. While McMurdo's ice pack can be difficult to navigate, it provides a perfect habitat for rich sea life such as the bony "ice fish". Other notable species of sea life include a variety of urchins and anemones, as well as baleen whales, Weddell seals, and Emperor penguins.
