Built around the River Usk and considered the gateway between Wales and England, Newport is a city steeped in history. It was first settled by the Celts more than 2,000 years ago and then the Romans some 70 years later. It was here that the Romans built Caerleon, one of their most important military sites. The remains of Caerleon's barracks, amphitheater and bathhouse are still visible and open to the public. The Tredegar House and the Transporter Bridge are also popular Newport sites. Those interested in medieval maritime history won't want to miss the Newport Ship, a medieval vessel discovered on the banks of the Usk in 2002 and dating to the 15th century. Newport is also home to a castle, cathedral and city museum.
