Supporting lush plants and wildlife with its volcanic soil, the island of Nissiros (or Nisyros) has a semi-active caldera. The largest crater, Stefanos, has hot springs and boiling mud on display for visitors to the crater surface. The island also has several small towns and villages with narrow lanes and brightly painted houses.
