Rising from the frigid waters of Lancaster Sound, Prince Leopold Island is a stark, oval-shaped fortress defined by sheer cliffs that tower 300 meters above the sea. This Migratory Bird Sanctuary is the most significant multi-species seabird colony in the Canadian Arctic, serving as a vertical citadel for nearly 200,000 pairs of birds. Massive populations of thick-billed murres, black-legged kittiwakes, and northern fulmars crowd the limestone ledges during the short summer. To protect this fragile ecosystem, visitors typically view the "blizzard" of avian life from the decks of expedition ships or Zodiacs rather than landing. The surrounding waters are equally vibrant, often hosting belugas, narwhals, and polar bears against a dramatic, windswept High Arctic backdrop.
