Founded as the Villa de Puerto Caballos in 1524, this port has become the most important port city in Central America, beiing the main commercial gate between Honduras and the world. Puerto Cortes has probably the best four-lane highway in Central America and is connected with an excellent road system to most of Honduras' main tourist attractions. This port city sits on a large bay backed by Laguna de Alvarado. The climate is hot, though tempered by sea breezes, and there are many beautiful palm-fringed beaches nearby.
