Founded in the early 1900s, Talkeetna began as a mining and railroad hub. Today, the village is on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a gateway to Denali National Park and Preserve and its namesake peak, the tallest in North America. Coffee shops, art galleries and more surround downtown’s plaza, and the Talkeetna Historical Society Museum, housed in an old schoolhouse, peers into the town’s past. For a taste of adventure, outfitters offer flightseeing, snowmobiling, mountain climbing and hiking excursions. Three glacial rivers converge here, so visitors also can expect plenty of fishing, boating and rafting.
