With its name literally meaning "Bird Island," the uninhabited Torishima rather appropriately serves as a bird sanctuary, natural monument, and national wildlife protection area. The island is one of four known breeding zones for the rare Short-tailed Albatross, and provides nesting grounds for about eighty percent of the breeding population. As the island is an active volcano, only scientists can obtain special permission to land there. Ships may circumnavigate the island so that passengers can observe the albatross community in its protected natural state.
