Whangarei is the northernmost city in New Zealand. There are many ecological areas to visit in the city, including Mount Parihaka, a 20 million year old volcanic dome to the northeast of the city center. The Hatea River flows through the city and empties into the harbor. There are several cultural areas as well, including the Whangarei Arts Museum and Hundertwasser Arts Center.
