Trade Up During Bargain Season

Email a Friend

We've just entered the bargain season for the cruise industry, that three-month period between Labor Day and mid-December that typically boasts the year's lowest cruise prices.

Many cruise lovers pick this time of year to trade up in the level of accommodations, from an inside cabin to ocean-view, ocean-view to balcony, or balcony to suite. It's quite possible to enjoy the extra space and amenities of a suite at the same price you might have paid in the past for a balcony or even a non-balcony ocean-view -- on the same ship.

Suite size and amenities -- and other perks that come with them -- vary quite a bit from suite to suite and ship to ship.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a complex of Villas and Suites called The Haven with access to a private sundeck with a pool, hot tub and fitness area. Guests in these accommodations also receive 24-hour butler service, priority boarding of tenders in ports of call and priority embarkation and disembarkation.

In Celebrity's Penthouse Suites, you'll find a separate living area with a baby grand piano and a private veranda with whirlpool.

The Presidential Family Suites on Royal Caribbean accommodate up to 14 passengers in four bedrooms. The balcony has a whirlpool, wet bar and dining area.

Royal Caribbean's AquaTheater Suites on the Oasis-class ships feature wraparound balconies that overlook the Boardwalk "neighborhood" and the unique AquaTheater; each also has an outdoor dining area and bar. These two-bedroom, two-bath family suites accommodate up to eight people.

Guests staying in Carnival's Cloud 9 Spa Suites receive unlimited access to the spa's thermal suites and thalassotherapy pool, in-room spa-related amenities and priority spa reservations.

Passengers staying in Neptune Suites and Pinnacle Suites on Holland America receive exclusive access to the Neptune Lounge, which provides refreshments throughout the day and concierge service. Room amenities include coffee and espresso makers and Bose SoundDocks.

The new Seven Seas Explorer from Regent has the stunning two-bedroom, 3,026-square-foot Regent Suite (with a 1,417-square-foot veranda). It boasts an outdoor Jacuzzi, a Steinway piano and an in-suite spa retreat with sauna, two ceramic heated loungers and a treatment area.

The next Silversea ship, Silver Muse (due in April), will debut the line's first two-bedroom Silver Suites. Each measures 1,119 square feet and is well-suited for families.

Guests in the Penthouse Suites aboard Crystal enjoy in-suite afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails and canapés. They also can opt to have meals from the specialty restaurants served course by course in their suite.

Princess Suites passengers enjoy priority disembarkation at tender ports, complimentary laundry service, nightly delivery of hors d'oeuvres on request, a complimentary minibar setup on embarkation day and an extended room service menu.

The Penthouse Spa Suites aboard Seabourn's three 450-guest ships offer unlimited access to the spa's Serene Area (with heated lounges and steam baths), as well as a minibar stocked with fruit juices, flavored waters and healthy snacks.

The starting suite price appearing on our site will be the rate for the least expensive suite still available on that sailing, which in some cases may be a mini-suite or junior suite. These smaller suites may not include all of the extra services and amenities available to guests staying in larger suites.

However, we offer the lowest price you'll find on every category of suite, and our cruise counselors can check availability and provide a price and list of amenities and perks for any type of suite that interests you.

Please note that there are only a few suites in the top categories on each ship, and they frequently are among the first staterooms on the ship to sell out.
